THE PLACE & THE MUSIC

A place to pause.

St Mary’s records both the growth and repeated rebuilding of Islington. Its eighteenth-century tower, designed by Lancelot Dowbiggin, survived the wartime destruction of the main church when bombing left much of the body of the building in ruins.

The post-war church was completed in 1956, pairing the surviving old steeple with a simpler modern interior. That contrast gives the Upper Street landmark its distinctive character. Its free Friday series now brings early-career musicians into a community space whose parish history reaches back many centuries.

Dates and free admission are checked individually against the organiser’s listings.
