THE PLACE & THE MUSIC

A place to pause.

The present St Alfege belongs to the great early-eighteenth-century rebuilding of London’s churches. Nicholas Hawksmoor designed its powerful classical forms after the earlier medieval building became unsafe, and it was consecrated in 1718. The church is dedicated to Alfege, the Archbishop of Canterbury killed at Greenwich in 1012.

At the centre of Greenwich, its monumental exterior gives way to an intimate setting for solo and chamber music. Wartime damage led to major restoration, while the crypt and later conservation work reveal the building’s long relationship with the town around it.

Thursday and Saturday recitals start at 13:05. The series has exceptions; only individually announced dates appear here.
