THE PLACE & THE MUSIC

A place to pause.

Sophienkirche was built in 1712–13 as the parish church of Berlin’s Spandauer Vorstadt and bears the name of its founder, Queen Sophie Luise. The simple Baroque hall was reshaped during nineteenth-century renovations, giving the interior its present neo-Baroque character while retaining the older pulpit, organ facade, baptismal font and grave monuments.

The church stands slightly back from Große Hamburger Straße within its tree-filled historic churchyard, where Carl Friedrich Zelter and Leopold von Ranke are buried. Its clear, relatively dry acoustic and Schuke organ support organ, choral and orchestral concerts as well as broadcasts. The surrounding churchyard forms a quiet enclave close to Hackescher Markt.

The two Organ Expedition conversation concerts listed here are individually verified as free and separate from worship.
