THE PLACE & THE MUSIC

A place to pause.

Hans Scharoun’s Philharmonie opened in 1963 as the first major building of Berlin’s Kulturforum. Its sculptural form and vineyard-style main auditorium became influential ideas in concert-hall design, placing listeners around the musicians rather than behind a conventional proscenium.

The free lunch concerts take place in the foyer rather than the main hall. Scharoun’s flowing staircases, galleries and changing sightlines gather listeners around compact chamber performances. The building stands close to Potsdamer Platz, beside the Staatsbibliothek and across the Kulturforum from the Neue Nationalgalerie.

Free concerts at different times of day; see each individually checked listing.
