THE PLACE & THE MUSIC
A place to pause.
La Madeleine’s temple-like colonnade is one of Paris’s most recognisable façades, commanding the axis towards the Place de la Concorde. The present building was shaped by changing plans across the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries before being consecrated as a church in 1842.
The broad, dimly lit interior supports a musical life embracing the French organ tradition, choirs and large ceremonial works. Camille Saint-Saëns and Gabriel Fauré both served as organists here. Admission varies by event: Hour Classics includes only performances explicitly advertised as free.
Free concerts at different times of day; see each individually checked listing.
