THE PLACE & THE MUSIC

A place to pause.

Lauderdale House was built in 1582 for Richard and Dorcas Martin. Over the following centuries it passed through a succession of owners and uses, serving at different times as a private home, school and place of convalescence. Arbella Stuart, a cousin of James I, stayed here briefly in 1611 while travelling under the king’s orders.

In 1872 the Prince of Wales opened the house as a rest home for patients recovering after hospital treatment. Its more than four centuries of history now form the setting for an arts and community venue. Concerts bring another chapter to a building whose rooms have accommodated very different kinds of gathering.

Free 45-minute lunchtime recitals. The organiser asks visitors to reserve a free ticket.
