THE PLACE & THE MUSIC

A place to pause.

St Bride’s stands on a site with nearly two millennia of history. Remains of a Roman pavement survive in the crypt, alongside evidence of earlier churches. The medieval building was destroyed in the Great Fire of 1666, after which Christopher Wren designed the church whose tiered spire still defines the Fleet Street skyline.

Its association with printing began when Wynkyn de Worde established his press in the churchyard in 1500. Publishers followed, and the church became closely connected with the newspaper industry that later flourished around Fleet Street.

Incendiary bombs gutted the church in 1940, leaving its spire and outer walls standing. Restoration took seventeen years and enabled archaeological excavations that uncovered the foundations of six earlier churches. Today its recital programme continues the building’s life as a gathering place for London.

Recitals usually take place on Tuesdays and Fridays, 13:15–13:55. Individual dates are checked separately.
