THE PLACE & THE MUSIC

A place to pause.

Downing Place United Reformed Church brings together the histories of Emmanuel and St Columba’s. Emmanuel’s earlier home stood in Hog Hill, now Downing Place, before a move to Trumpington Street in 1874. St Columba’s congregation was formed in 1879 and first met at Cambridge Guildhall; its own church opened on the present corner site in 1891.

Both congregations developed connections with the university and the wider city. Their union as Downing Place URC was inaugurated in June 2018, with renovated premises on the former St Columba’s site. Today the building’s public lunchtime concerts continue that tradition of welcoming people from across Cambridge into a shared space.

Dates and free admission are checked individually against the organiser’s listings.
