THE PLACE & THE MUSIC

A place to pause.

The Conservatoire began with local residents establishing the Blackheath Conservatoire of Music in 1881. Community investment helped pay for its purpose-built home, which opened in 1896, followed by the adjoining School of Art a year later. Together with Blackheath Halls, these buildings form a long-standing arts complex.

The music building’s Queen Anne-style brick frontage includes carved musical details. During the Second World War its basement served as an air-raid shelter, and graffiti from that period survives. The neighbouring art school reopened in 1983 after decades of military use, later joining with the Conservatoire. Music and visual art continue side by side, with public recitals extending the work of the teaching rooms.

Dates and free admission are checked individually against the organiser’s listings.
